Science in our society

The scientific method is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry is commonly based on empirical or measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning.

For many people science and scientific method are two BEST ways of gaining knowledge. While it is true in many instances there are many problems with knowledge claims in science.

In its most fundamental sense, modern science is a process by which we try to understand how the natural world works and how it came to be that way. It is NOT a process for merely collecting “facts” about, or just describing, the natural world, although such observations do provide the raw material for scientific understanding. Scientific knowledge is the inferences that scientists draw from the data – the models for how things work.

For a long time science and scientists hold a truly honored position in our modern society. The findings made in science have not only lengthened out lives but increased the quality of life as well.

Science is also a source of pride for many people. People are assured to know that when they get sick it is because of germs not because some evil spirit has taken over their bodies. It is a source of assurance to actually gain knowledge about real world.
